Choosing Your Program

If you are unsure which program you would like to attend, there are different ways to save money based on the program you choose. Many students at USF will study abroad during the summer for four to six weeks in Europe. However, considering alternative semesters and locations can get you more bang for your buck.
Overall, the shorter the program, the cheaper the cost, however the longer the program, the more cost effective the trip may be. For example, most summer term four to six week programs cost about $4,000-6,000. Most fall and spring 15-week programs cost $8,000-10,000. For double the price, you can go for three times as long.

Another important thing to consider is the cost of living in different countries. You can live on $10 easily in Southeast Asia, but $25 a day is more realistic spending in Europe. Also consider the season you are planning to go. If you go during summer you will also be competing with the tourist crowds, which can raise the prices, especially for flights.
If you are an out-of-state student however, summer might be the best time for you to go. When studying abroad, your tuition will be reduced to in-state tuition. Since in Florida’s state university system you are required to take summer courses, this could save you money that you could put toward your flights or traveling on the weekends while abroad!
If you are set on going to Europe during the summer, there is nothing wrong with that. You just need to remember to give yourself enough time to plan and save so that you can have money to do all the things on your bucket list.
